Donald J. Bassett, 69
SPENCER - Donald J. Bassett, 69, of 4 Water St., a retired business owner and operator and a longtime musician, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Providence Extended Care Center, Worcester, after a brief illness.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Beverly A. (Fountaine) Bassett; a son, Norman D. Bassett of Spencer; two daughters, Diane I. Baxter of the Jefferson section of Holden and Lynn C. Dalbeck of Princeton; a sister, Claire Lapierre of Hernando, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was born in Spencer, son of Ernest and Irene (Gauthier) Bassett, and wintered in Orange City, Fla. He graduated from David Prouty High School and attended New England Conservatory of Music, Boston. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Bassett was a licensed electrician and electrical contractor, owning Don Bassett Electrick for 30 years and retiring in 1994. He was also a professional musician, playing drums in area bands here and in Orange City. He taught drums from his home for many years and played drums in the Navy band at Dwight D. Eisenhower's inauguration.
He was a member of American Legion Post 138, Spencer Lions Club, and Our Lady of the Rosary Church. He enjoyed playing horseshoes.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Mary, Queen of the Rosary Cemetery. W.J. Bassett, Orchestra Leader, Faces Assault Complaint
East Brookfield, Feb. 3 ? Wilfred J. Bassett, 37, Spencer orchestra leader and former town constable, was fined $10 on a complaint of assault and battery on Napoleon Delarge, Jr., 23, also of Spencer, by Judge Arthur F. Butterworth in district court yesterday. A counter complaint against Delarge was dismissed.
The altercation took place at the Roosevelt hall in Spencer town hall Wednesday night when, according to Bassett?s testimony, Delarge said to him, ?Don?t be a Boy Scout all your life.? He admitted striking Delarge, but said that it was in self-defense. Delarge told the court that he was not addressing Bassett.

SPENCER - Leo J. Bassett, 94, beloved father, grandfather and brother who will be missed dearly, died Tuesday March 9 at Oakwood Rehab. & Nursing Center in Webster. He was the husband of Helen (Kosiarski) Bassett who died in 1971. He leaves a daughter Irene R. Wife of Robert W. Gould, Sr., of Webster, three grandsons Robert W. Gould, Jr. of Webster, James R. Gould of Putnam, Ct., and William P. Gould of N. Grosvenordale, Ct. three granddaughters Donna M. Cleaves of Webster, Sheila M. LaPlante of Dudley and Leona M. DiTullio of Webster, a sister Jeannette LaCroix of Branford, Ct., 18 great grand, and 2 great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bassett was a wire tester at the former Worcester Wire Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1974. Born in Spencer, he was the son of Ulric and Lucy (Lamothe) Bassett. Mr. Bassett played drums for many years with the "Leo Bassett" Orchestra. He was a former member of the former Spencer Redmen's Club I.O.R., and the Spencer Lion's Club.
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 13 from the J. Henri Morin & Son Funeral HOme, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. Burial will be in Mary, Queen of the Rosary Cemtery, Spencer. A calling hour will be held Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to David Prouty High School Music Dept., Attn: S. Torrey, 302 Main St., Spencer, MA. 01562.

Irene R. (Bassett) Gould, 84, of Webster, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at home after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 63 years, Robert W. Gould, Sr.; 6 children: Robert W. Gould, Jr. and his wife Gloria Gould, Donna M. and her husband Curtis Cleaves all of Webster, James R. Gould and his partner Beverly Drowne of Thompson, CT, Sheila M. and her husband Robert LaPlante of Charlton, Leona M. and her husband Edward M. DiTullio of Webster and William P. Gould and his partner AnneMarie Orn of Thompson, CT; a sister, Constance Gould of Worcester; 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was born in Spencer, a daughter of Leo J. and Unabelle (Coty) Bassett. She was a graduate of Assumption Academy in Nicolete, P.Q. Canada.
Mrs. Gould worked for many years as a bookkeeper at the former Bayer Motors in Dudley, retiring in 1990.
She was a member of Saint Louis church and a member of the Saint Louis League of Catholic Women. She had a great love for children and enjoyed helping out at her daughters' daycare center. She especially enjoyed the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs. Gould's family would like to express their appreciation for the care that was shown to her by the VNA Hospice of Worcester.
The funeral will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main St., with a Mass at 2:00 PM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. Burial will be in Mary Queen of the Rosary Cemetery, Spencer. A calling period will be from 12:30 to 1:30 PM Saturday in the funeral home. Donations in her name may be made to either, VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01610 or to the Saint Louis School Endowment Fund, 15 Lake St., Webster, MA 01570.
