Ora Mae Bassett
Bassett, Ora Mae, 94, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2003. She was born September 9, 1908, in Atoka, Oklahoma, and was preceded in death by her father, Hansford Lloyd Bassett, mother Etta Mae Lake Bassett, brothers Hance Floyd and Wallace. The Lake family settled in North Texas in 1889 from Dadeville, Alabama. The Bassett family arrived in Texas from New Ireland, Mississippi. Ora Mae majored in music at the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, now USAO, and completed postgraduate work in voice at Columbia University in New York City. She taught music at the elementary level in Perry, and in High School and Jenks, before joining Shell Oil's production office in Tulsa. Later, she was transferred to Oklahoma City, where she made a home for her widowed mother and her twin brother, Wallace, who suffered from Cerebral Palsy.
