Former Nashville council member passes away
Nashville's first female council member, Rebecca "Becky" Jones Bass, passed away Friday, July 29 at the age of 83.
Bass served the town from 1975 to 1987. She was honored by the Town of Nashville in 2018 for her service not only as the first woman elected to the board but also a part of the transition of the board from a Commissioner to a Council-Manager form of government in 1978.
The decision to move to a Council-Manager form of government was reportedly a controversial one but Bass was vocal about her support for the change and is noted in the resolution adopted by council as being "instrumental in converting the Town of Nashville to the Council-Manager form of government."
Bass began her working career at Carolina Telephone. She later worked alongside her husband at L.R. Bass & Son in downtown Nashville. The couple also co-owned and operated W.B. Florist.
After closing L.R. Bass & Son, Becky went to work at John's Gifts and retired from the Nash County Clerk of Court.
Bass also received recognition during her career years as the first president of Nashville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Nashville Jaycettes Outstanding Woman of the Year.
She was born January 19, 1939 in Halifax County to the late James B. and Irene Braddy Jones. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Marvin. R. Jones (Pat).
Becky leaves behind her husband, L.R. "Teck" Bass, Jr., and their children: Leslie R. Bass. III (Janet), Daniel Bass (Renee) and Beth Edwards (Tim). Grandchildren include: Trent and Sarah Bass, Danielle and Mallory Bass, Luke and Sadie Edwards. Additional family members include her brother, Fred Jones (Peggie), a sister in law, Sandra Davenport (Dickie).
