Bassett, Ora Mae, 94, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2003. She was born September 9, 1908, in Atoka, Oklahoma, and was preceded in death by her father, Hansford Lloyd Bassett, mother Etta Mae Lake Bassett, brothers Hance Floyd and Wallace. The Lake family settled in North Texas in 1889 from Dadeville, Alabama. The Bassett family arrived in Texas from New Ireland, Mississippi. Ora Mae majored in music at the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, now USAO, and completed postgraduate work in voice at Columbia University in New York City. She taught music at the elementary level in Perry, and in High School and Jenks, before joining Shell Oil's production office in Tulsa. Later, she was transferred to Oklahoma City, where she made a home for her widowed mother and her twin brother, Wallace, who suffered from Cerebral Palsy. After retirement, she was active in several organizations. She was a founding member of the Garden Party Rose Unit, and was elected to several offices in the Oklahoma City Republican Women's Club. For many years, she was a devoted member of the Village Methodist Church, and as her eyesight failed, she became active in the Macular Degeneration Support Group. Survivors include nieces, Barbara Bassett Beson, Elberta, Alabama; and Joyce Bassett Prim, Houston, Texas; a nephew, Harold Floyd Bassett of Frand Lake, Oklahoma; several grandnieces, and many friends who loved and admired her. Family and friends also wish to thank the staff of The Manchester House for their care and concern. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 22nd, at the Village Methodist Church, 2501 N. Britton Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Ora Mae Bassett Scholarship Fund in care of the Village Methodist Church, or to the charity of your choice. Cremation Society, 1145 W.
