NORTH BROOKFIELD, MA - Alan L. Bessette, 79, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. He leaves his loving wife of 27 years, Karen E. Bessette; a daughter, Nancy Bessette of Warrenton, VA; two sons, Thomas Bessette and Sabrina of North Brookfield and Mark Bessette of Douglas; a step-daughter, Katie Lauzon of Pittsfield; a step-son, Peter Lauzon and his wife Tere of Brookfield. Alan considered his step children as his own and was a loving father to all our children as they were growing up. He also leaves a brother, Richard Bessette of New Mexico; eight grandchildren, Susan Bessette, Amity Lauzon, Zachery Berthiaume, Jetta Berthiaume, Adam Lauzon, Reilly Ireland, Teagan Bessette, Landon Bessette and another grandson Nolan due in March; one great-granddaughter Ashlyn and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Judy Siebold in 2014. He was born in Amesbury, son of the late Earle T. and Ruth (Trull) Bessette and grew up in Merrimac and on Webster Lake before moving to Dudley and then to North Brookfield in 1987.
Mr. Bessette was a foreman for Ethan Allen Furniture in Dudley, retiring after 43 years.
Alan was a member of the North Brookfield Sportsmen's Club and as a young man he enjoyed hunting in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire with his buddies from Ethan Allen Furniture. He also enjoyed deep sea fishing and loved to work on machinery of which he could fix anything. Alan was a quiet man who did not like a fuss, but helped many people and had many friends.
A Funeral Service for Alan will be held Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 6:00 PM in the Varnum Funeral Home, Inc., 43 East Main St., West Brookfield. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 4 to 6 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be held privately in Mountain View Cemetery in Orwell, VT in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Alan's memory may be made to the Overlook Masonic Hospice Services, 88 Masonic Home Rd., Charlton, MA 01507.
