Jessica P. Byrd
BRATTLEBORO – Jessica Pauline Byrd, 79, of 6 Valgar Street in Brattleboro, died unexpectedly Friday night at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Byrd was born in Leicester, Vt. on her grandparents farm on November 16, 1916, the daughter of Harry and Lotta (Memoe) Bissette. She was raised and attended local schools in Brandon and attended high school in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, N.Y.
A resident of the area since 1939 she moved to Brattleboro from Brandon.
Mrs. Byrd worked several years at the Estey Organ Company in Brattleboro. For 20 years she was employed as a secretary for William Cudworth at the Crosby Milling Co. also in Brattleblro. She then went to work for the U.V.M. Extension Service, Brattleboro office, retiring in 1982. In her retirement she worked as a church secretary of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Brattleboro, for five years.
A woman of strong faith she was a communicant of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro where she taught religious studies for several years. She was a member of the former Con Fraternity of Christian Mothers at St. Michael’s Church.
Mrs. Byrd enjoyed sewing, nature, working in her flower and vegetable garn, loved animals and most importantly time spent with her family.
On January 28, 1939 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon, she was married to Charles A. Byrd. Mr. Byrd died in 1951.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Lower of Richford; one grandson, Daniel Finnell and his wife Heidi (Aplin), three granddaughters, Colleen Hernandez of El Cajon, Calif., Erin Lower of Brattleboro, Jessica Lower of St. Albans; three great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Martin Bissett and George Bissette, and a sister, Mona Wasner.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, January 23, 1996 at 1 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. William S. Chant, Pastor of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford, officiating. Burial in the Byrd family lot in St. Michael’s Cemetery will take place in the spring. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Byrd’s name may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
