      James Dudley Bass, 13, who was accidentally shot in the neck on April 27, while examining guns with two companions, died early Wednesday in Memorial Mission hospital.
      He had been on the critical list since his admission, although reports varied at times and there were hopes that he might recover.
      He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. Earle Bass of 48 Edwin Place. The accident occurred in a bedroom of the home involving guns taken from a locked closet. The one with which James was wounded was a .44 caliber pistol.
      At Claxton school where James was in the seven grade, he was a member of the school band and Art Club. He had also played football in the YMCAS Gra ? Y program and had played Little League baseball two years.
      An Asheville native, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Boy Schout Troop No. 8, sponsored by the church.
      Surviving in addition to the parents are a sister, Mrs. Garrett B. Bishop of Asheville, and a brother, O. Earle Bass II of the home.
      Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church.
      The Rev. A. Allen Gardner Jr. and the Rev. Leroy V. Secrest will officiate and burial will be in Lewis Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be members of Boy Scout Troop No. 8.
      Arrangements are under direction of Morris ? Hendon Funeral Home.
      The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Presbyterian Home For Children, Black Mountain.
