Richard E. Bassett Dead, Aged 80 Years
Native of Bergen Well Known And Respected
Richard E. Bassett died yesterday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock at his home on Clinton street, aged 80 years, having been confined to the bed about ten days. The cause of his death was old age. Mr. Bassett, who was a son of Samuel and Betsey Bassett was born in Bergen, where the greater part of his life was spent. He was one of ten children, six daughters and four sons, only one of whom is living. On August 22, 1858, he married Caroline Dilts of Wainfleet, Ont., who survives him. Up to the time of his last illness Mr. Bassett was very active for one of his years. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was faithful in attendance at its services. He loved the Bible and shaped his life by its teachings; He never forgot how to begin the day and every morning bent the knee in prayer for guidance. He lived peaceably with all men; spoke ill of no one and made no enemies: was kind, helpful and a good neighbor. Besides his wife he leaves a son Samuel E. Bassett, a brother, Philo B. Bassett, who is staying at the Graham sanitarium In Rochester. The burial will take place in Mt. Rest cemetery.
