Funeral Services Held for Richard John Bassett
There passed away at Victoria, BC a highly respected citizen of
Gilbert Plains in the person of Richard J. Bassett, age 84. He had gone there
Dec. 1st to spend the winter but passed peacefully away in his apartment Dec.
20th.
Mr. Bassett was born at Goderich, Ont. 1855, spent his youth days at
Huntsville, Muskoka. Then farmed for six years in North Dakota; going to
Florida in 1890 where he married Lillian Adriana Lyman; returning to South
Dakota, where they farmed for four years; their two eldest children were born
there. They returned to Florida remaining four years before coming to Gilbert
Plains in 1897 to farm where he resided up until his death and where the
remaining four children were born.
Mourning his loss are two daughters, Mrs. G.B. Plummer and Mrs. Gordon
Crowe of Gilbert Plains; four sons, Morris, Vernon, Fred and Roy all of
Gilbert Plains. One brother William of Aurora, Ont.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. Dickson, M.A., B.D. in St.
Paul's United Church Tues., Dec. 26. Pallbearers were Mw. Schaefer, Wm.
Gardner, Don Rowat, Jas Dimmic, R. Hawkins, Geo. Lee. Burial was made at the
Chatsworth cemetery. During the service Mrs. C.F Caldwell sang a solo.
Beautiful floral tributes were received from Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Sutherland;
Mr. & Mrs. F.L. Peskett, Mouth View Ladies Aid, the family and grandchildren.
The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the family on this
sudden passing.
