Thursday, November 30, 1950 Oquawka Man Fatally Injured; 2 Others Hurt in Wreck
Oquawka - News became current here in the late afternoon, the afternoon before Thanksgiving that Fred and Bert Martin, east of town, and Ben Bass of Oquawka had suffered injuries about 10 o'-clock that morning when the pick-up truck owned and being driven by Fred Martin had collided with a station wagon on Highway 61 about 9 miles southwest of Muscatine during the snowstorm. All three were taken to Belleview hospital in Muscatine and Mr. Bass passed away there at 6 o'clock Thursday afternoon, November 23, after he had been injured internally and also sustained a broken pelvis bone. Fred Martin, 68, suffered chest and knee injuries and Bert Martin's injuries included a damaged shoulder, cuts and bruises. Occupants of the station wagon were treated and released from the hospital. Both Fred and Bert Martin were brought from the Muscatine hospital to Monmouth hospital Sunday to be cared for, and both are reported to be getting along as well as possible at this time. The three men had taken a load of clam shells, belonging to Mr. Bass, to Muscatine and were returning home when the accident happened. Mr. Bass, aged 73, was born in Marion County, Illinois on November 23, 1877, the son of John and Jane (Cooper) Bass, and was the last remaining member of a family of eight children. He married Susan A. Holden on March 26, 1908 in Ripley County, Missouri, and she preceded him in death in 1921. Surviving him are two sons, Henry E. Bass of Walla Walla, Washington, and Benjamin Bass of Canby, California, one daughter, Mrs.Ralph Sells of Oquawka and nine grandchildren. He had lived in Henderson County and Gladstone and Oquawka townships for the past 30 years. He had farmed and had also worked for the C. B. & Q. railroad. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Moose lodge. The body was taken to the Mudd Funeral Home in Biggsville, where funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock followed by interment in Biggsville cemetery.
