      Charles R. Bassett
      Charles R. Bassett, 72, died Tuesday following a lengthy illness. A native of Winter Haven, FL Charlie grew up in Jacksonville, graduating from Lee High School in 1950. He was a member of the swim team, track team and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He joined the American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corp in 1949 and served as a lifeguard for three years in Jacksonville Beach.
      Prior to founding his own company, Charles Bassett and Associates, Mr. Bassett was employed by Houdaille Duval Engineering and was chosen to lay out the launch pads at Cape Canaveral. Many of the projects Mr. Bassett's company was particularly proud of were Amelia Island, Sawgrass and Jacksonville International Airport. He was a member of the NE Florida Homebuilders Assn. and served on it's board of directors for 16 years; a member of the West Duval Jaycees; served on the School Board from 1965-1972 and held the position of chairman for four years, a founding member of the Marlin Assn; a founding member of the Commodores League; a member of the Captain's Club; the Jacksonville Offshore Sport Fishing Club; the Safari Club International; the Jacksonville Gun Club and a member and board member of the St. Augustine Gun Club. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Lane; his five children, Rob, Rick, Randy, Russell and Charlene; his brother, Dale Bassett and sister Phyllis Bassett Dixon. A Memorial Service celebrating Charlie's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday in Palms Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the American Diabetes Assn.
