Retired Express agent Dies
Gouverneur – Carl E. Bassett, 79, of 4 Johnson St., a retired railway
express agent, died Monday in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertow
where he had been a patient ten days. He had undergone surgery May 2
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. James Church. Rev.
Norman Poupare, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in new St. James Cemetery.
A graveside service will be conducted by James Maloy Post 65, American Legion.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lillian J. Bassett; a daughter, Mrs.
James (Marion) Glynn, Paramus, N.J.; two granddaughters and a grandson, and
two sisters, Miss Ann Bassett and Miss Beulah Bassett, both of Watertown.
Born April 16, 1894, at Canton, a son of Rufus and Orah Deuel Bassett,
he was graduated from Canton High School and served in the Army from 1916 to
1918. He joined the American Express Company in Massena in 1920 and was
transferred to Gouverneur in 1923. He continued as express agent until
retiring in 1970. He married Lillian Jesmer at Massena Nov. 8, 1922. Rev. J.M.
Bellamy officiating.
