Harry Bassett, a former resident of this village and a son of the late Dr.
John Nelson Bassett, at one time one of the best known physicians of Canton,
is reported critically ill of pneumonia in a Rochester hospital. The
information came to Dr. and Mrs. James M. Payton. Dr. Bassett was a
cousin of Mrs. Payton.

Body Of Harry Bassett, Son Of Late Dr. J. N. Bassett, Brought Here For Burial
The body of Harry Bassett, son of the late Dr. John Nelson and Lillian Wright
Bassett, of Canton, who died in Rochester after a period of critical health
from heart ailment, arrived here on the Friday evening train and was taken to
the Lawrence Funeral Chapel where service was conducted Saturday at 2:30, the
Rev. John A. Erickson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and the Rev. H.
P. Morrell, of the faculty of Canton Theological School, officiating.
Interment was made at Fairview where three generations of Bassetts rest.
Harry Bassett was born in Canton fifty-two years ago and his life to maturity
was spent in Canton. His father and mother were of old early Canton families,
the Bassetts and Wrights. His mother was the daughter of the late William
Wright of Canton, and was during her early life before her marriage to Dr.
Bassett, a teacher in the old grade school of Canton that stood where t
Grammar School now is. There are among those older residents of Canton those
who took instruction under her.
Dr. John Nelson Bassett, the father of Harry Bassett, was native of Canton,
the son of the older John Bassett. John Bassett the elder, was a brother of
Elijah Bassett, father of Mrs. Flora Bassett Payson, wife of Dr. James Milford
Payson. In Fairview the burial plots of the Paysons, the Bassetts and Wrights
are adjoining, the Paysons in one plot with granite shaft and markers, while
just south of it is the John N. Bassett and the Wm. Wright lots with markers
for numerous members of the family.
Dr. Bassett was for long years a beloved physician of Canton, a graduate of
St. Lawrence University in 1878 and of the College of Physicians and Surgeons
of New York City in the early eighties. He opened practice in Canton a
married Lillian Wright in these years of the eighties. He was long interested
in the schools and village politics. He was for many years president of the
Board of Education of Canton and was a member of Canton Village Board a
village president in the nineties. He died in 1906. His wife, Lillian Wright,
died in 1929, while residing with her son Harry, at Rochester. There were two
children of the marriage of John N. and Lillian Wright marriage, Harry and
Johnnie, the latter dying in the early nineties, when two or three years of
age, as the result of taking morphine tablets which he found at his father's
desk.
The Bassett home stood where the High School building now is on Court Street.
When the ground was sold for a school site about thirty years ago, the house
was taken in sections to other sites and now still stands as part of two
modern homes. Harry Bassett was born in this house; Dr. and Mrs. James
Milford Payson were married in this house sixty-two years ago; the first John
Bassett died in this house, as did Dr. John N. Bassett.
Harry Bassett was educated in the local schools, attended Eastman Colle
Poughkeepsie, and was for a number of years employed at St. Lawrence State
Hospital where he married his wife. They removed to Rochester, several years
ago where he was for some time in the employment of the Eastman Kodak Co. For
some time past he had been in critical health. His death came suddenly,
following the serving of food to him by his wife.
