Notes - At the age of 21, Lemuel Franklin Bassett went to California and settled at Sacramento. He inherited from his father a natural love for mathematics and devoted most of his life to civil engineering and surveying. At Sacramento, he held the office of county surveyor and city engineer. In 1891, he removed to Redding, where he bought a farm and engaged in scientific farming. When Redding became a city, he was employed to establish grades and lay out a sewer system. In character he was above reproach, his word was as good as his bond, and his habits in daily life were so methodical, the neighbors were said to have set their clocks by him.
