Birdie Bassett Gordon
Birdie Bassett Gordon of Laurel passed away suddenly on Friday, March 19, 2010, at the residence of her nephew and niece, Mike and Clydette Nelson. She touched many lives as she and her husband operated their privately owned grocery store, Gordon's Grocery. She later worked for Alex Loeb department store in Laurel. She was a loving Aunt with strong family loyalty throughout her 96 years. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her genuine interest in others, and her beautiful flowers. She was a member of Leaf River Baptist Church in Pineville, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, T.N. Gordon, and her parents, A.T. Bassett, Sr., and Lonie McNeil Bassett. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Travis Bassett, Terrell Bassett and Hick Bassett; three sisters, Jeralene Carlisle, Annie Mae Nelson and Bertha Tally. She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews who loved her greatly and whom she loved greatly. Serving as pallbearers are Bill Bassett, Bill Roberts, Mark Roberts, Mike Roberts, Joe Tally, and Don Waites. Honorary pallbearers are Earl Blakeney, Danny Ellzey, Ronnie Gordon, Mike Nelson, Darrell Roberts, and Lavoy Wardell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideons. Visitation will be Sunday, March 21, 2010, from 5-8 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2010 at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home with interment to follow in the Leaf River Cemetery in Pineville, Mississippi.
