Dies After Attending Funeral Of Relative

With the death of Mrs. Nancy Bassett, 86 years old, Tuesday afternoon, shortly after she had returned to her home, 1309 Parmele st., from the funeral of her son-in-law, Edward H. Atwood, and eventful, brave life was ended.
"Grandma" Bassett will be mourned not only by her own family but by the young people of her neighborhood, who have been her dear friends and who never tired of her stories of overland treks and adventures of by-gone days.
She had planned to have her picture taken on Tuesday, in a five-generation group, with her daughter, Mrs. George Vincent, aged 64: her granddaughter, Mrs. Louis Brennan, 44; her great-granddaughter, Mrs. Rayner Nelson, 21; and her great-great-grandson, little Gordon Rayner Nelson, who is just four weeks old. It amused Mrs. Bassett that she, life her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter, would be wearing her hair bobbed and curled, before the camera.
      Native Of New York.
Nancy Sears was born in Duchess county, New York, May 15, 1840. She moved in her childhood to Pennsylvania, and after the death of her parents, she came to Illinois when she was 14. At 18 she was married at Spring, Ill, to James Pierce.
Eight children were born to the union. Mr. and Mrs. Pierce and their family traveled overland to Missouri, where they had difficulty keeping their fine horses from the horse thieves who roamed through the country west of the Mississippi and Mr. Pierce died on Feb. 17, 1874. Alone, with her six children, the mother returned to Illinois.
On Dec. 2, 1874, she married Perris Bassett, and to this union five children were born. Mr. Bassett died on March 31, 1919.
      Active in Enworth Church.
Mrs. Bassett was an active member of the Epworth M.E. church. In spite of her advancing years, she was lively and able to care for herself. She delighted to tell her stories of the tragedies and the little comedies of pioneer days in the middle west, and she always had an interested audience.
Mrs. Bassett is survived by eight children, Mrs. Lillian Atwood, 326 Irving ave.; Mrs. Mary Fox, 239 N. Chicago ave.; Mrs. Georgia Thompson, Peoria; Mrs. Ella Vincent; 326 Irving ave.; Mrs. Imogene Bunker, Elkton, Md.; A.W. Bassett, 308 N. Day ave.; Mrs. Laura Johnson, 1309 Parmele st., and Ray H. Bassett, of California.
She also leaves 29 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Fannie Murphy, 809 N. Court st.; and a brother, Hiram J. Sears, 308 Howard ave.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, with a service for relatives only at 2pm. At the Johnson home, 1309 Parmele st., and a service at 2:30 p.m. at Epworth M.E. church. If arrangements can be made, the Rev. C.M. Jaycox, former pastor of Epworth church, will officiate, assisted by the present pastor, the Rev. Paul Fricke. Burial will be in Cedar Bluff cemetery.
