Putnam Station. George J. Bessette, Jr., 60, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2014 at home.
Born on October 4, 1953 in Ticonderoga, George was the oldest son of the late George Bessette, Sr. and Mary (Walsh) Bessette.
George was a devoted husband and father. He loved feeding and identifying wild birds, being outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, swimming, doing yard work, and camping. He also enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.
He enjoyed following Matt Kenseth in NASCAR; and also enjoyed watching his nephew, Mark Mortensen (1M team) race stock cars at the Fonda Speedway.
George loved animals and enjoyed caring for numerous family pets and horses throughout the years. He also enjoyed playing with his great-granddaughter, Abbigale Smith, who referred to him as "GG".
Earlier in life, George was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Ticonderoga Fire Department, and the Ticonderoga Police Department.
George spent most of his adult life working in the fuel business delivering oil and propane and installing and servicing furnaces and eventually became self-employed in this field under the name of "Bessette's Heating and Plumbing". He had many loyal customers and was always highly regarded in his line of work.
Besides his parents, George was pre-deceased by his two sisters, Darlene Marie and Penny Sue; and his brother, Thomas Lloyd Bessette.
George is survived by his wife, Debra of 37 years; daughter, Stacie Paquin and her husband, Doug of Ticonderoga, grandson, Rusty Paquin and his wife, Macy, great-grandson, Aiden and great-granddaughter, Felicity of Washington, and granddaughter, Keann of Ticonderoga; daughter, Noelle Smith and her husband, Joseph of Putnam Station; brother, William Bessette and his wife, Jackie; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call Tuesday, June 17, 2014 from 3 - 6 p.m. at the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in George's memory to the American Brain Cancer Society (donate.cancer.org) and/or High Peaks Hospice, P.O. Box 192, Port Henry, NY 12974.
The family would like to thank High Peaks Hospice for their support and kindness and to Dr. Hellman and his staff for their support from the very beginning.
