Roy B. Bass Retired Chief Master Sergeant
Roy B. Bass, 81, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Clayton and Carthage, died Sunday in Tucson under the care of Tucson Veterans Affairs Hospice staff.
Mr. Bass was a retired chief master sergeant in the Air Force. He also enjoyed being a docent at the 390th Memorial Museum Foundation, Pima Air and Space Museum, and served as a volunteer at Tucson Veterans Affairs Hospital.
He attended New Life Wesleyan Christian Center, Tucson, and was a member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, 8th Air Force Historical Society, 95th Bomb Group, Southern Arizona Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 549, Disabled American Veterans Chapter Arizona 2, and American Legion Post 36.
Born July 16, 1921, in Newton, Mass., son of Fred and Flora Bass, he was a 1939 graduate of Clayton High School. He joined the Air Force in August 1942, serving as a flight engineer in Europe during World War II. He was shot down on his 25th mission over occupied France and was held as a prisoner of war in Germany for 15 months, being liberated in May 1945. After the war, he was discharged from the Air Force and worked for Gillick's Garage in Clayton and Lofink Motors, Carthage, before reenlisting in the Air Force, retiring after 27 years of service.
He married Beverly C. Uselton on May 16, 1947, in the United Christian Church, Carthage, with the Rev. John C. Wetzel, pastor, officiating. The couple first lived in Clayton and later moved to Carthage and then to Arizona.
Surviving besides his wife are three daughters and a son-in-law, Sally Wirth, Hooksett, N.H., and Cheryl and Benjamin Solorzano and Patti Flanagan, all of Tucson; four grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at East Lawn Palms Mortuary chapel, Tucson. The body will be cremated.
