Prominent Texas Resident, Native Of Clinton, Dies
Charles N. Bassett, 64, prominent El Paso, Texas civic leader, and property h9lder who died Saturday June 10 in a Santa Monica, Calif. hospital was a native of Clinton. He was born in Clinton Oct. 8, 1880, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. O.T. Bassett. Mrs. Bassett was the daughter of Aquilla Nebeker, pioneer Clinton resident.
With his parents, he went to El Paso when quite young but after the death of his mother, returned to Clinton where he made his home with his aunt, Mrs. Laura Nebeker Washburn.
Mr. Bassett was also the nephew of Mrs. Melissa Bogart who makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. D.C. Shaff, South Fifth Street. Mark E. Nebeker of Clinton and Paul N. Bogart of Terre Haute, former Clinton resident, are also cousins.
He was graduated from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind.
He had been a resident of El Paso for the past 44 years and was well known in business and banking circles. At the time of his death he was chairman of the4 board of the State National Bank of El Paso. He was author of the city budget system of El Paso adopted in 1921. Listed among his civic and financial posts were president of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, president of the El Paso Gateway Club, and general chairman of the community chest.
He had bee in charge of war bond sales in the El Paso district in the past four drives and was also serving as chairman of the bond sales in 11 east Texas counties.
In addition to extensive real estate holdings in California, he was owner of the chain of Gateway hotels in El Paso, Lordsburg, N.M. Van Horn and Marfa, Texas. He also owned other property in El Paso.
Mr. Bassett had built the O.T. Bassett Tower in El Paso in honor of his father and one of the main throughfares n the city is names Myrtle Street in memory of his mother.
He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Myra Bassett and three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Gates Birmingham, Elizabethtown, Ky., Mrs. Hal Doughtery, Jr. and Miss Betty Bassett, both of El Paso and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in El Paso, Monday, June 12.

Charles Bassett Burial Monday
Funeral services for Charles N. Bassett, who died in Santa Monica, Calif., Saturday, will be held in El Paso, Texas, Monday, it was learned by Decatur relatives yesterday.
Mrs. Bassett is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Theron A. Powers, of Decatur. The Bassetts and their daughter, Betty, had gone to California late in the winter for a rest.
Mr. Bassett lived in El Paso all his life except when attending Wabash college and later while visiting in Decatur in the home of the Theron Powers.
He and Myra Powers were married in 1915. He was president of the El Paso State National bank, was owner and operator of a chain of hotels and was engaged in the ranching business.
The Bassetts have two other daughters, Mrs. Barbara Birmingham, For Knox, Ky., and Mrs. Myra Hathaway Doherty, of El Paso.
Buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso, Texas is the following:

C.N. Bassett, was a widely known figure in banking circles of El Paso
and the great Southwest for a number of years and was President of the State
National Bank of El Paso, oldest bank in this city and which was established
in 1881. Mr. Bassett began his connection with this pioneer banking house in
1908 and was President of the institution from 1922 to 1944. Mr. Bassett was
also extensively interested in cattle and sheep ranching and owned a large
ranch in Otero County, New Mexico.
C.N. Bassett was born in Indiana, a son of the late Oscar Thomas
Bassett, a pioneer business man who came to El Paso from East Texas in 1880
and engaged in the lumber business until his death in 1898. Mr. Bassett was
educated in the schools of Indiana and graduated from Wabash College with the
class of 1900. He continued to operate the O.T. Bassett and Company lumber
business for some years following his father's death. The elder Bassett came
originally from Vermont and spent some time in California a few years prior to
his death.
Mr. Bassett was married July 14, 1915, at Decatur, Illinois, to Myra
Giles Powers, the daughter of Theron A. Powers and Hathoway Jones Powers of
Decatur. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett became the parents of three daughters; My
Hathaway, now the wife of H.M. Daugherty, the Vice President of the Sta
National Bank; Barbara Giles, now Mrs. Thomas Birmingham of Baltimore, Md.;
and Betty Avery, now Mrs. Charles B. Hammond of El Paso.
In 1929 Mr. Bassett built the Bassett Tower as a memorial to his
father. He engaged actively in civic affairs and was a member of a number of
local organizations and the Texas Bankers Assn., and the American Banke
Assn. Mr. Bassett was a thirty-second degree Mason and member of El Mai
Temple Shrine of El Paso. He passed away June 10, 1944 at Santa Monica,
California. Mrs. Bassett has always taken a prominent part in civic and social
activities of El Paso and resides at 717 Blocker Street.
