Mary ?Bergie? Bassett
Mary "Bergie" Bassett, age 85 of Cloquet, Minnesota passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living. She was born on February 17, 1939, to Victor and Florence "Stella" (Whitebird) Berglund in Duluth, Minnesota. Bergie was raised and attended school in Cloquet. She worked at the paper mill until her marriage to Clayton "Jack" Bassett in 1959. She then began working as an aide at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. In the late '80's, Bergie furthered her education at the University of Minnesota ? Duluth Campus where she studied business education. She applied her learning to her career as Indian Education Director for Cloquet Public Schools for 33 years prior to her retirement.
In her spare time, Bergie enjoyed fishing, camping, and doing crossword puzzles. She was very family-oriented and never forgot her loved ones' birthdays. Family picnics on summer holidays always brought her joy.
Bergie is survived by her husband, Jack; children, Clayton "Bato" (Penny) and Scot (Edie) Bassett, and Rita (Tony) Vinopal; grandchildren, Jeremy Nelson, Brandon (Callie) Bassett, Haley (Chaise) Jokinen, Jeremiah (Katy), Joshua (Amanda), and Justin (Rachel) Kubat, Cody Bassett, and Noah, Evan, and Adam Vinopal; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn (Scott) Grover; and brother-in-law, Wilfred "Jiggs" Bassett. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kim Johnson; and sisters, Ruth Townslee and Joyce Berglund.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. A luncheon will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Fond du Lac Language & Cultural Center in Cloquet. Inurnment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Cloquet.
