Debbie Bassett Withers
Private services for Debbie Withers were held in Brunswick, Georgia on July 25th. The Rev. Joe Williamson officiated followed by interment at Brunswick Memorial Gardens.Debbie passed on the 23rd of July, 2011 at her home in Atlanta, Georgia after an extended illness. She is survived by James H. Anderson, her loving partner, sons Thomas Niles and James David, and 11 grandchildren. Debbie was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi on September 26, 1947 and was the only issue of James B. Bassett and Bertie Pettus Bassett. She was the breadwinner for her family from age 15, a graduate of Philadelphia High School in 1965 and a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. From 1979 to 1987 Debbie traveled the world with her sons and husband, Niles Jerry Withers, and spread love to every person she met, from Philadelphia, Mississippi to South East Asia and China. All that met Debbie loved her, and all that met her were, by their acknowledgement, better for having met her. When she returned to the states Debbie began a career as a legal secretary and moved to Atlanta where she ended her career with the prestigious firm of Kilpatrick Stockton when her health prevented her from performing at the exemplary level she herself held, but assuredly she touched deeply the lives of those she worked with and for. Her greatest joy was to make others around her happy. Debbie was given the affectionate name of “White Momma” by her grandkids, and it stuck to her even at work. One of her passions was music and she dearly loved Jimmy Buffet songs and was an acknowledged “Parrot Head”. No one could help but smile when they saw her she was a song and it showed. Debbie saw more of the world, and got to do the things that she missed while growing up and having to work, with the love of her life, Jim Anderson. Jim has taken such good care of Debbie; both of her heart before she was sick, and of her soul and body after she became ill. She has loved him every day for the past 34 years, and will continue to love him from her better place. Debbie recanted, “I’m the luckiest woman alive to be loved by not one but five men: Howard and Jim Anderson, Niles, Tom, and David.” We were the lucky ones, though and rejoice in the fact that we are better people for having known her and loved her, and especially that we were loved by her. She made all of her men better men. We are all heartbroken and very sad not to be able to have her smile our way, and tell us we are all brave, or handsome, or that she is proud of us. We sure are proud of her. What a great woman she was. What a mother. What an adventurer. What a great friend. Today, Debbie lives and shines through Jim Anderson, Niles Jerry, Thomas Niles, Margaret “Alittlebit,” Deborah Ann, Michelle, Emily Joe, James Matthew, Niles Austin, Amorn Withers, and Pelobia Boleh and the countless friends and acquaintances that she had met along the way from Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Maine, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and China. It’s been a great adventure for Debbie. We are rejoicing that she is in a better place and that in heaven she can keep on going, and taping her foot with God in three quarter time. May she rest in eternal peace and our eternal love.
