David Holman Bass passed away peacefully on July 16th in Guilford, CT.

David was born on September 13, 1939 to Jean and Arthur Bass in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in nearby Swarthmore with his younger brother Dirck. He graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1957 and went on to attend Tufts University, his beloved alma mater, where he majored in Economics and was elected to Phi Betta Kappa. He was proud of this honor and always good humored when his family later joked that ?it must have been a bad year.?

After graduating from Tufts in 1961, David got his first job at IBM as a sales representative but deferred a year to enlist in the United States Coast Guard, where he earned the rank of lieutenant and began his lifelong devotion to ?Mother Ocean.? In 1966, he left IBM to found his own computer service company, the Computer Results Corp. He worked for the next decade as an executive in the industry after his business merged with Tymshare, Inc. Following a love of nature nurtured since his days as a boy scout, David also hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 1975. Shortly thereafter, he left the east coast to found a Godfather?s Pizza franchise in Illinois, eventually opening seventeen restaurants across the state. He earned his pilot?s license and flew between his restaurants, often with a pizza in tow.

In 1983, he sold the pizza franchise and moved to Charlottesville, VA with his wife Nancy Kim Bass. They made their home on a farm in southern Albemarle for the next three decades, where David learned to care for the land. They raised a herd of beef cattle that still features in Nancy?s paintings. David was active in the Charlottesville community, serving on several boards including as chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals. In more recent years, David and Nancy lived between Boca Grande, FL, Weaverville, NC, and eventually settled in Guilford, CT.

David was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, friend, and sailing partner, who embraced his nickname ?Captain Bligh? despite never once experiencing a mutiny. He taught his children that the best thing one could do was to never take oneself too seriously. He is survived by his wife Nancy, by his children Jennifer Bass, Marisa Bass, Nancy E. Bass, and Jeffrey Bass, and by their families.
