      Dr. Charles L Bassett, 84, died on Nov. 12, 2014, in Texarkana, TX, from complications of liver cancer. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 15 at Texarkana Funeral Home located at 3515 Texas Blvd., Texarkana, TX, with Dr. Terry Land officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Texarkana.

      Charles was born June 23, 1930, in Marietta, OK, to Charles Bassett and Eva Bassett Holloway. He attended school in Marietta and graduated from Marietta High School in 1948. He went on to attend North Texas State College, graduating in 1952. He married Rosalene Plumlee on Aug. 26, 1951. He served as Pastor of Jimtown Baptist Church in Oklahoma before moving to Gainesville, TX, to work for National Supply. In 1960 he moved to Plainview, TX, to begin his more than 50-year career at Wayland Baptist University. He faithfully served Wayland in a number of positions including Vice President of Finance and Vice President of Denominational Relations. In 1980 Wayland awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree and in 2004 he received the Wayland Distinguished Lifetime Service Alumni Award.

      Charles lived in Plainview for more than 40 years where he was actively involved in the First Baptist Church teaching Sunday School and serving as Chairman of Deacons. He was also involved for many years in the Panhandle-Plains Pastors' and Laymen's Conference, and was active in the Rotary club of Plainview. He and Rosalene moved to Weatherford in 2002, then Texarkana in 2010, where he most recently served as Treasurer of the Wood?s Edge Resident?s Association at Cornerstone Retirement Community. At the time of his death, he was a member of First Baptist Church in Texarkana.

      He is survived by Rosalene, his loving wife of 63 years, and two sons Charles L. Bassett, Jr. of Texarkana and his wife, Trina, and Gregory Bassett of Houston and his wife, Claire. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Charles L. Bassett, III and his wife, Cortny; Sarah Thomasson and her husband, John; Allison Ratto and her husband, Chris; and 2nd Lt. Colin Bassett and his fiancé, Jennifer O?Brien. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Leah and Charles L. Bassett IV and Lillian Ratto. He leaves behind numerous members of his extended family and many friends.

      A visitation will be held prior to the funeral service at noon on Nov. 15 at Texarkana Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Charles & Rosalene Bassett Endowed Scholarship at Wayland Baptist University; 1900 West 7th Street; CMB 1295; Plainview, TX 79072 or a charity of choice.
