Bassett, Jay - General agent, The Provident Life and Trust Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, born Novi, Oakland County, Michigan, January 21, 1848; son of John and Ervilla (Coomer) Bassett; graduate State Normal School, Ypsilanti, Michigan, June, 1873; married at Ann Arbor, Michigan, August 23, 1876, Mary A. Baker. Taught school for two years after leaving normal school; studied law in Detroit for three years, was admitted to the bar and practiced until 1885; entered life insurance busiess and became general agent of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company of Boston, June, 1887, continuing for ten years; became general agent of the Provident Life and Trust Company of Philadelphia, October, 1899, and six months later formed partnership with N. Reese, as Bassett & Reese, the firm since acting as general agents of the Provident Life and Trust Company. Member Detroit Life Underwriters' Association. Independent Democrat in politics. Universalist in church affiliation. Mason, Knight Templar. Recreations: Farming and forestry. Office: 44-45 Home Bank Building. Residence: 96 Canfield Aveue West

John Bassett
Mrs. Bassett was born April 17, 1816, in Yates County, New York. She died in March, 1887. Nine of her thirteen children are still living. They are as follows: Samuel, born February 18, 1838. He married Dorinda Holmes, and with his wife and four children resides in Novi Township, Eugene was born December 10, 1840, and married Elizabeth Hamlin, and they with their three children are living at Ypsilanti. Celestia, born May 10, 1842, is the wife of Bathurst Davis, and lives in Waco, Texas. She has been twice married and has three children by the first union. Irving, who was born January 2, 1844, married Hannah McKendrick, and lives at Ironwood, Michigan, with his wife and five children. Mary L., born October 23, 1845, is the wife of Edgar O. Durfee. They live in Detroit and have four children. Truman J., born January 21, 1848, married Mary Baker and makes his home in Detroit. Kate, who was born Aprl 20, 1851, is single. Antoinette, who was born July 8, 1855, is Mrs. Orren S. Hulett and lives in Detroit. She has four children. Vie, born March 5, 1859, married Vernon Merserveau, of St. Louis. They have three children.

Jay Bassett, Insurance Man, Dies Suddenly
Jay Bassett, of the insurance firm of Bassett & Resse, died, Saturday, in Bay City, from a tumor of the brain, following a nasal operation. The funeral was held from his residence, No. 96 Canfield-ave. west, Monday afternoon at 1:30.
Mr. Bassett left Detroit for Bay City, two weeks ago, expecting to stay there one day. He was taken ill very suddenly. Mrs. Bassett was t her husband?s bedside when he passed away.
Mr. Bassett was born in Novi, Mich., Jan. 17, 1851. He was graduated from the Ypsilanti Normal school and taught school for two years before beginning the study of law. He practiced law until 1885, when he entered the insurance business. Mr. Bassett is survived by three brothers, John E. basset, who has recently retired as principal of the Johnston school; Samuel Bassett, of Novi, and Irving Bassett, of Wyoming, and four sisters, Mrs. Edgar O. Durfee and Mrs. O.S. Hulett, of Detroit; Mrs. Celestia Davis, of Waco, Tex., and Mrs. C.V. Mersereaux, of St. Louis.
