Dilys Bass ?Dee? (Walters) Stowell (1949-2017) (Picture included)
NORFOLK, Va. ? Dilys (Dee) Walters Bass Stowell, born Sept. 12, 1949, in Lumberton, N.C., died on the morning of March 9, 2017, of complications of breast cancer.
Dee lived the last 30 years in Norfolk, Va., a community she cherished. Her contagious enthusiasm for nature, history, literature, art, family, and the many people whose lives she touched brought great joy to Dee and all who knew her. Along with her infectious laughter and her wonderful sense of humor, she freely shared her passions for butterflies, birds, gardening, photography, beekeeping, calligraphy, and pottery. Dee's gardening friends far and wide will long enjoy the plants and flowers and stories she shared over the years. Also among the treasures of Dee's life were her kitties ? often rescues that seemed to want to follow her home.
Dee was predeceased by her parents, Cora Lutie Walters Bass and Marshall Guilford Bass, her sister Geraldine and brother Joe.
She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 47 years, Thomas (Tom) Leo Stowell; and by her brother, Jim Bass (Sara) of Sanford, N.C., and sisters Grace Britt (Colin) of Lumberton, N.C., Becky Fain (George) of Waynesville, N.C., and Jane Holt (Townsend) of Florence, S.C. Her family also includes many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
News of Dee's passing has brought shared memories and sentiments from Dee's many friends who noted, "Dee took pieces of our hearts with her. She touched us irrevocably, and for that we are thankful. Soar with the butterflies and bees, sweet woman, and take our love with you."
No service is planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dee's memory may be made to her longstanding scholarship fund at her alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
