Viola Lucille Smith German Bassett

Viola Lucille Smith German Bassett was born March 25, 1921, in Marion, Indiana. She was the second child of seven born to Lillian and Winfred Smith. She died in Indianapolis Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at Community Hospital North.
She was employed at Delco Electronics Division of General Motors Department 8105, M.O.S. FABII from 1972 until 1989 and was a member of Local 292 United Auto Workers Union. She was the mother of one daughter, Veronica German, Alameda, California.
After living many years in various parts of the USA and raising her daughter with her husband Al German, (deceased in 1969) in the state of Louisiana, she returned to Indiana in 1970 and lived in Kokomo until her death.
She married Sherman Bassett in 1978, and they enjoyed much traveling together until his death in 2000. She is preceded in death by son-in-law Stephen Coates, grandchildren Monique and Darrel Gulley, and great-grandchild Davendar Gulley.
She loved her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Viola was a home economist, very creative and artful, learned the trade of custom tailoring and sold her own clothes for decades. She also played the piano and enjoyed cooking as well as gardening. She was raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and converted to Catholicism, but she enjoyed visits to nondenominational churches in her latter years. She will be missed by her culturally diverse family, friends and community as she was outspoken and active.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Pastor Louis Parham will be the officiant and eulogist. Friends may call from 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo.
