Mrs. Norman L. Bassett
Mrs. Lula (Holden) Bassett, widow of Norman L. Bassett, former Justice
of the Supreme Court for the State of Maine, died Monday night at Putnam
Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient only one day. She would have
been 93 years old today.
Born in Palmer, Mass., Oct. 25, 1873, she was the daughter of John S.
and Jennie (Goodell) Holden. Her father was a partner in the old Hold
Leonard woolen mills on BenMont Avenue. A graduate of Wilbraham High School in
Massachusetts, she had attended Wellesley College. She and Mr. Bassett were
married in Bennington in 1903 in the old Second Congregational Church on Main
Street, where Vermont Bank & Trust is now located. The couple lived in Maine
after their marriage, where Justice Bassett served the Supreme Court for that
state.
When Mr. Bassett died in 1931, Mrs. Bassett returned to Bennington and
made her home at 213 West Main St., which residence she kept until 1958 when
she moved to Old Bennington.
Mrs. Bassett was extremely fond of her church, the Second
Congregational, and for many years was secretary of the Women’s Fellowship,
where she did an outstanding job. She was also a member of the reading group
of that church and participated in many of the other church function
Survivors are one brother, Clarence Holden of Old Bennington, many
nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours at the Hanson – Walbridge Funeral Home,
but a funeral service will be held in the chapel there Wednesday at 2 p.m. The
Rev. Thomas Steffen, pastor of the Second Congregational Church will
officiate. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta, Maine, at a
later date.
Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the
King’s Daughters, of which she was a devoted member for many years. These may
made through the funeral home.

Mrs. Lula H. Bassett
Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Holden Bassett, longtime resident of
Bennington who had resided previously in Maine, when her husband was Justice
of the Supreme Court for the State of Maine, were held Wednesday afternoon at
the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
The Rev. Thomas Steffen, pastor of the Second Congregational Church,
officiated. Mrs. Bassett had been a devoted member of the church and ve
active in its work over a long period of time.
Attending the service were officers and members of the Women’s
Fellowship of the church, members of the King’s Daughters, and friends and
relatives.
Honorary bearers were: Waldo C. Holden, Theodore H. Thomas Jr., Dr.
Woodhull Hall, Dean F. Hanson, Dr. Rollin D. Jenney of Bennington; George H.
Bickford of Grafton, Mass.; Holden B. Bickford, Sheldon H. Bickford and John
H. Bickford of Northfield, Vt., also John C. Bordon of Marlboro, V
The Rev. Mr. Steffen offered the committal prayers. Burial will take
place at a later date in Augusta, Maine, in the Forest Grove Cemetery.
