- Norman graduated 1 Jul 1891 from Colby University. His scholastic
record was excellent. He taught Greek and Latin at Colby for three years
following graduation. He resigned to study law. He studied for 1 year with his
uncle, Leslie C. Cornish in Augusta, Maine. In the Fall of 1895 he entered
Harvard Law School, from which he graduated cum laude on 29 Jun 1898. H
class elected him the class marshal for the graduating exercises, a much
prized honor.
He returned to the office of Mr. Cornish, and was admitted to t
Kennebec bar on 18 Oct 1898. The partnership of Cornish & Bassett was formed
in 1901, and continued until 31 Mar 1907 when Mr. Cornish was appoint
justice of the Supreme Judicial Court.
He was counsel for numerous corporations, and trustee of several large
estates. In June, 1908, he became a trustee of the Augusta Savings Bank, and
in January, 1914, a trustee and member of the Executive Committee of the State
Trust Company of Augusta. In October, 1916, he was elected a director of the
Boston and Maine Railroad. On 5 Apr 1905 he was appointed by Governor Cobb the
legal member of the Maine Enforcement Commission, and served until 8 Apr 1907
when he resigned. He was always a Republican. He was a member of the Augusta
Common Council in 1911, and of the Board of Alderman in 1912-13-14. In April,
1907, he was elected secretary and treasurer of the Maine State Bar
Association, succeeding Judge Cornish. In 1907 he also became a member of the
American Bar Association. He also took a deep interest in civic institutions
of all kinds.
