Served in US Navy during WW I (21 Apr 1917 to 16 Sep 1919), service number 1441086; separated as Quartermaster 1st class, honorable discharge certificate #33581. Worked for a while for Louisville and Nashville (L & N) Railroad at main office in downtown Louisville (abt 1920). Commissioned Lieutenant, USNR, 15 Aug 1928 (based on service as a merchant marine officer) Address in 1936: 2964 Perry Ave, NY, NY. Served in US Navy during WW II (4 Jan 1940 to 16 Mar 1946). The "History of United States Naval Operations in World War II," 1968, by S.E. Morison, in Vol IX, p. 390, lists the U. S. Naval forces engaged in the assault on Sicily, 10 July-17 Aug 1943, and includes in TF87 TRAIN the oiler "Rapidan," commanded by Cdr M. D. Mullen, USNR. Commanding officer of hospital ship USS Tranquillity at end of war and transported survivors of the sunken USS Indianapolis from Palau to Guam. Following WWII, returned to U. S. Lines steamship company; was Master of SS American Reporter and other freighters. Collapsed while in command of SS American Reporter approaching Plymouth England on 4 Apr, died in English hospital on 6 Apr. Buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Grave 2035, Section 30 (next to wife). SSN 086-16-3074
