Earl Glade Bass, one of three children of Zeno and Rena (Gipe) Bass, was born at Strahan, Iowa on March 30, 1915. Earl grew up in the Strahan community and graduated from Strahan High School. He received his higher education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri. It was at Tarkio that Earl met Helen Louise Christensen and they were married in Pittsburg, Kansas on September 1, 1934. After their college days, they joined Earl's parents in their livestock and farming operation in Strahan. Earl and Helen were blessed with two daughters, Pamela and Cynthia. When Pam was old enough to start school, the family moved to the Zeno Bass Sr. family home in Malvern, Iowa. Earl was an active member of the Malvern Methodist Church and served many offices. He was a charter member of the Mills County Extension Council when it was formed in 1955, and was on the first board of the Malvern Village. Earl served on the last Malvern School Board before it was reorganized into the Malvern Community School District. Earl and Helen helped organize the Nishnabotna Girl Scout Council, and were active members in the Mills County Flying Club. They enjoyed having their own plane and flying to flight breakfasts in many parts of the Mid-United States. In 1958, Earl entered the grain storage business expanding the Earl Bass Elevator from Clark Station to the south edge of Malvern where he built a large storage facility. In 1970, Earl became an Iowa State Senator and served two consecutive terms. He also served as chairman for the Mills County and Malvern Planning and Zoning Committees. Earl was an active member of the Mills County Historical Society contributing a tractor and other memorabilia to the museum collection where he served as a volunteer tour guide. Earl was a strong supporter of the 4-H program helping wherever needed. Earl retired from the grain business and 50 years of farming in 1981. Earl and Helen remained active in the community, enjoyed golf, and traveling throughout the United States and overseas. Earl and Helen had been married for 59 years when Helen died on June 11, 1994. Following Helen's death, Earl's love for the game of golf continued. He enjoyed the daily game and the companionship of the "One O'clock Club," as they were called, who met on the golf course each afternoon when the temperature was above 50 degrees.
On March 18, 1995, Earl married Marjorie Ruth (Donner) Dashner. They had been married for four years when Marjorie died on July 24, 1999.
Earl continued to live at home and was a strong supporter of his family and his grandchildren's many activities. Earl died at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs on September 18, 2002 as a result of a head injury suffered during a fall. He had attained the age of 87 years, 5 months, and 19 days. Earl was preceded in death by his parents Zeno and Rena Bass, wives Helen Bass and Marjorie Dashner Bass, sister Irolene Bass Roberts, and one grandchild, Robert Dale Obrecht.
