Affidavit, State of Ohio, Lorain County
Marion Bassett Edwards, being first duly sworn according to law, upon
her said oath deposes and says as follows:
That she is the wife of Mr. J.L. Edward and now resides at 318
Edgemear Place, in the City of Oberlin, Lorain County, Ohio; that she is a
daughter of Miles Standish Bassett and Lois Orlissa (Eggleston) Bassett and
was born in said Lorain County, Ohio, near said city of Oberlin, on the 5th
day of October, 1883; that affiant's father was born in said Lorain County in
1851 and died there in May, 1935; that his father and mother were Charles and
Emma (Parson) Bassett, and that said Charles Bassett was a son of Nathan and
Sarah (Standish) Bassett; that affiant has a sister, Cora E. Bassett, born
April 1889, unmarried and living with her at the above addres
That this affiant and her said sister have in their possession the
original of the old "Family Register", enclosed in frame and glass, of their
paternal great grand-father and grand-mother Nathan and Sarah (Standish)
Bassett, whereon there is entered not only their own vital data but also the
names, dates and places of birth, marriage and death of their nine children,
viz; Thomas, Phebe, Sarah, Naomi, Betsey, Freelove, Amanda, Emily and Charles,
and also the names of the parents of said Nathan and Sarah respectively; that
this "Family Register" has been in the possession of successive generations of
this Bassett family time now immemorial; that affiant first knew it in her
youth, at which time it was in the possession of her paternal grand-father
Charles Bassett and upon his death in 1912 it was passed into the possession
of affiant's father Miles Standish Bassett and upon the death of the latter in
1935 it was passed into the possession of affiant and her said sister and that
it has been in their possession and control at all time since; that the
annexed paper, marked "Exhibit A" for identification and bearing my signature
opposite thereto, witnessed by C.W. Kinney, the Notary Public whose jurat is
underwritten, is a full, true and complete photographic copy of said "Family
Register"; that said photographic copy, "Exhibit A', aforesaid, has been made
for, and at the instance and request of, Charles W. Richards of Indianapolis,
Indiana, to enable him to attach such copy, together with this affidavit, to a
certain compilation or book now in the Indiana State Library at Indianapolis,
Indiana, in the Genealogy Section, entitled "Standish-Bassett (in line)
Mayflower Families", the same being reference or catalogued No. therei
And on her said oath affiant further says that said Nathan and Sarah
(Standish) Bassett are buried in the Bassett family lot in Evergreen Cemetery
near South Amherst, in Lorain County, Ohio, and that she well knows said
burial place; that grave stones are at the site of their graves with their
vital data thereon as entered on said "Family Register"; that about the year
1929 a bronze marker was placed at the grave of said Nathan Bassett by the
D.A.R. Chapter of Elyria, Ohio, in honor of his record as a Revolutiona
soldier; that Thomas Bassett, the eldest child of Nathan and Sarah, and his
second wife Nancy, and some of their children, are buried in a little country
cemetery just west of Mill Hollow, Brownhelm Tp. in said Lorain Co. and with
grave stones at their graves with their vital data thereon. And further
affiant sayeth not. Marion Bassett Edwards.
