Irolene Marie Bass Roberts
Irolene Marie Bass Roberts, daughter of Zeno and Rena Bass, was born October 21, 1907, at Strahan, Iowa, and departed this life May 21, 1981, at Mt. Ayr hospital. She was 73 years, 7 months of age at her passing.
Irolene received her education from the following schools: Strahan Consolidated, Tabor College, University of Iowa, Sherwood School of Music and Drake University. She became a member of the Methodist church at an early age and was always supportive throughout her life in its many activities.
On May 13, 1929, after having taught her first year of her twenty-five years in this profession, she was united in marriage to Walter E. Roberts, who was superintendent of the Troy School.
Since they both had permanent teaching certification and education, they guided pathways for many during their years of service. Thoroughly enjoying their many talents, their home always open to friends. The Iowa schools where Irolene taught were Troy, Walnut, Atlantic, Lucas, Mount Ayr Community School System, Grand River, Diagonal, Orient Macksburg and Clearfield.
In 1953, nine year old twins daughters, Jean and Janet, were welcome into their home.
Among her activities that she enjoyed were the following: DAR, American Legion Auxiliary, Indiana Pioneers, Monday Club, Hospital Auxiliary, Jamestown Society, AAUW, Sportsman Club, Century Club, UMW, Antique Club, Republican Women. She particularly enjoying pursuing family history as her family was so special to her. Travel was another interest as she was in constant pursuit to broaden her knowledge.
She was preceded in death by her parents and, her husband, Walter. Surviving are her twin daughters Jean L. Roberts, Winnebago, Ne., and Janet Gray of Mount Ayr, two grandsons; Terry John and Tim Gray, one sister, Anna Rose Coddington of Hasting, Ia., one brother, Earl Bass of Malvern, Ia., three nieces, two nephews, a host of relatives and friends and Phyllis Swanson who has been her constant companion.
Irolene will be truly missed by not only her family but also her many friends who were so meaningful to her through out her life.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church, Mt. Ayr, Sunday, May 24, 1981, the Rev. Lynn Potter, officiant.
Pall bearers were Peter Baker, Frank Baker, Venice Roberts, Danny Roberts, LaVerne Obrecht, and Bill Brewbaker. Honorary bearers were Austin Bass, Emmett Gipe, Otha D. Wearin, Earl Horne, William Finch , and Dr. B.W. Knight.
Organist was Mrs. Merrill Perry, music was by Bruce Huff.
Attending flowers were Pam Obrecht, Cindy Brewbaker, Doris Chester, Kathy Huggins, and Lana Baker.
Graveside services were held in the day at the Malvern cemetery, the Rev. Charles E. Cowell Jr., officiant.
