Michael A. Bassett, 46
Michael A. Bassett, 46, who owned a home-remodeling business and was active
for many years in the Boy Scouts, died Saturday, Nov. 3, of a heart attack in
his Chicago home. A former Eagle Scout, Mr. Bassett was a volunteer with the
Scout's advancement committee and the Chicago-area Council on Camping. He was
born in Los Angeles and moved to Chicago in 1960. He worked as an executive
recruiter for Edward Bart and Associates in Chicago for a few years, then left
to start a recruitment-consulting business with a friend. After about 10
years, Mr. Bassett opened his own recruitment office and worked there until he
launched his home-remodeling business six years ago. Mr. Bassett backpacked in
Montana, hunted in Michigan and fished in many locations, forming a fishing
club with friends in 1985 called the Gang of Six, which went on annual fishing
trips and held a tournament called the Pinky Cup for 16 years. Mr. Bassett was
good-natured and willing to help anyone, said his wife, Tricia. "He was a big
guy, and he could look pretty stern," she said. "He had a really strong
personality, but he had the biggest heart." As a Boy Scout volunteer, M
Bassett was active with the Cabrini-Green troop, sometimes purchasing supplies
out of his own pocket so the boys could go to camp, his wife said. Other
survivors include his father, William; a brother, Robert; and sister, Patty
Booker. Services were held in Chicago.
