HONORED MATRON PASSES AWAY
Once again the Grim Reaper has sharpened up his scythe and removed from our midst one of the best known and best beloved ladies of our community in the person of Mrs. Mable Sharon, beloved wife of William Sharon with whom the whole community sympathizes.
Her charities were numerous and anonymously given. She gave freely of her substance and without fanfare, but it is only just, now that she has passed that they should be mentioned as far as we are able to ascertain. When the U.S.O. was first mentioned in this community Mrs. Sharon personally donated the necessary sum to get it going and she was forever helping some of our service personnel to tide themselves over when in difficulty. No person did more for the war effort in Mojave than did Mrs. Sharon. Her services to the church of her adoption were numerous and she will be greatly missed from the ranks of the good ladies of the Community Congregational Church.
Mabel Bassett Sharon born January 27, 1901, at Philadelphia, Miss., the daughter of H.D. and Nannie Bassett, members of an old and prominent family in that vicinity, their home place being in the possession of the family for several generations. Besides her parents and husband, William Sharon of Mojave, she leaves the following brothers and sisters: Thurman D. Bassett and H.D. Bassett of Philadelphia, Miss., W.L. Bassett, Carthage, Miss., E.O. Bassett, Memphis, Tenn., WAC Sgt Lucille Bassett, Fort Ord, Calif., Mrs. Emma Lamar, Memphis, Tenn.; Mrs. Jerry Ryles, Mojave, Calif.; Maudine Bassett in U.S. Service, Philadelphia, Pa.; and Mrs. Mavis Slaton, Seattle, Wash.
Mrs. Sharon died shortly after a major operation at the San Joaquin Hospital, Bakersfield, on Wednesday, September 18, at 10 p.m. On Saturday evening the deceased accompanied by her husband and Sgt. Lucille Bassett, Mrs. Jerry Ryles and Mrs. Mavis Slaton left by way of the Santa Fe for Philadelphia, Miss., burial was in the family plot at that place. O'Donnell Funeral Home had charge of the services.
Prior to this the Order of the Eastern Star, Tehachapi, Chapter No. 188, of which Mrs. Sharon was a member, conducted the Easter Star funeral ritual for their departed sister with Worthy Matron, Rachel Hodges, Chaplain Ernestine Atkinson, Marshall Madge Grey; Ada, Edna Baughman; Ruth, Velma Smith, Esther, Willie Franklin; Martha Elizabeth Wells and Electa. Sarah Woods took a prominent part. Rachael Hodges sang "Star of the East" and at the conclusion of the ceremony all of the officers joined in singing, "Nearer My God to Thee."
