Norman J. Bessette, 68
FITCHBURG - Norman J. Bessette, 68, of 276 Lunenburg St., a longtime pipe fitter, died Saturday in his home after an illness.
He leaves three sons, Thomas Bessette in Florida, Jamie Bessette of Fitchburg and Greg Bessette of Westminster; a daughter, Michelle Velez in North Carolina; a brother, Leo Bessette of Fitchburg; four sisters, Evelyn Rounds of Sparks, Nev., Esther Helie of Winchendon, Irene McGowen of Lynn and Janet Jenness of San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces; and a close friend, Pierina F. Hannon of Fitchburg, with whom he lived. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Louis and Elizabeth (Bushman) Bessette, and lived here most of his life.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater.
Mr. Bessette was a pipe fitter at General Electric Co. for many years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the Eastwood Club, the General Electric Quarter-Century Club and Townsend Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The funeral will be tomorrow from Smith-Mallahy Funeral Home, 243 Water St., with a Mass at noon in St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. Contributions may be made to St. Camillus de Lellis Church, Memorial Fund, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg, 01420. Lamoureux Funeral Home, Gardner, is directing arrangements.
