Maida Z. Bassett, 71
Maida Z. Bassett, 71, a longtime Chicago Public School truant officer a
deacon at Lincoln Memorial United Church of Christ, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, in
her South Shore home after a long struggle with cancer. A Chicago native, Mrs.
Bassett was dedicated to her job as a truant officer because she believed she
was helping children. "She was the type who wasn't afraid," said her husband
of 47 years, William. "She would talk to the (truant) children; a lot of
parents really liked her for that." Mrs. Bassett loved to have family a
friends around and was always ready to open her home as a gathering place, her
husband said. She was a devoted mother who reached out to extended fami
across the country, he said. She volunteered for dozens of charities and
organizations and was so active in her church that she was asked to become a
deacon. "She was very dedicated, and the people there just loved her, so they
talked her into it", her husband said. In addition to her husband, Mrs.
Bassett is survived by two sons, Michael and Robert Anthony; and a daughter,
Patricia Booker. Services were held Saturday.
