- Celadon Bassett went into business with his brother-in-law, Joseph Echlin. Their business, Bassett and Echlin Company Manufacturing Saddlery and Harnesses did business of $175,000 a year and had $50,000 of capital in 1907.

In the spring of 1865, Howard F. Bliss came to Janesville, and entered the employ of Wright & Hunt, leather and saddlery hardware dealers, with whom he continued for three years. He then engaged in business for himself in company with Adam Hayner, in the same line of trade, saddlery hardware, under the firm name of Hayner & Bliss. A year later Mr. C. Bassett became a member of the firm, and the business was continued under the firm name of Hayner, Bliss & Co. About 1874, the senior member retired, and the business was carried on by Bassett, Bliss & Co. In 1876 J.C. Echlin purchased an interest, and the firm became known as Bassett, Bliss & Echlin.

Celandon Bassett Dead
Was Resident of Janesville, Wis, but Visited Often in Boston
Word was received here last evening of the sudden death of Celandon Bassett at Janesville, Wis. The deceased was 76 years of age and had been engaged in the harness and saddler business for many years.
He was well known in this city and for 40 years has invariably made a practice of coming here for long pleasure trips annually. He was in Boston for some months this year and left less than six weeks ago to return to Janesville. He has several relatives in this city.

Celadon Bassett, the wealthy wholesale saddlery dealer, who died here Sunday bequeathed a portion of his Janesville fortune to each of three Southern negro institutions, as follows: The Booker T. Washington school at Tuskegee, Ala.; the Beloit school at Beloit, Ala., and the Utica Norman and Industrial School at Utica, N.Y.

Old Harness Makers Retire From Trade
Nearly Half a Century of Operations
Closed in Consequence of Janesville Fire

Janesville, Wis., Dec. 19 ? Articles of dissolution for the Bassett and Echlin company, proprietors of one of the oldest harness manufactories in the middle west, have been filed. The company?s factory was destroyed by fire about a year ago and the financial condition was such that it was found advisable not to continue. The firm was established in 1866 by H.F. Bliss and Adam Hayner. Later Mr. Bassett became a member and the firm was known as Hayner, Bliss & Co. Mr. Echlin became a member in 1880 and in 1883 Mr. Bliss retired to become editor of the Gazette. The firm from that time on was known as the Bassett & Echlin Co.
