Walter A. Bassett, 88, of Old Barre road, Petersham, who served 27
years as an assessor, died yesterday in his home. He conducted a large dairy
farm in Petersham for a long time.
He was born in Barre, son of Henry and Stella (Brigham) Bassett, and
lived in Petersham 58 years. He is survived by a son, Leslie, of Petersham;
four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and three brothers, Charles Bassett
of Barre and Arthur H. and Bernard Bassett of Tacoma, Wash.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Barre Methodist
Church. Burial, in charge of the Snyder and Britton Funeral Home, Barre, will
be in Glen Valley Cemetery, Barre.

W.A. Bassett dies in Petersham
Native of Barre Once Operated Stage Line Between Barre and Barre Plains.
PETERSHAM - Funeral services were held Monday for Walter A. Bassett,
88, of Old Barre road at the Barre Methodist Church. Rev. Burton D. Connerly
officiated. Burial was in Glen Valley cemetery, Barre.
Mr. Bassett, who had lived here for 58 years, was born in Barre, a son
of Henry and Jane Sophronia (Brigham) Bassett.
At one time he operated the stage line between Barre and Barre Plains
and later owned a jersey and dairy farm. He was a member of the Petersh
Board of Assessors for 27 years.
He is survived by one son, Leslie W. Bassett of this town, three
brothers, Charles H. Bassett of Barre, Arthur H. Bassett and Burnell F.
Bassett of Tacoma, Washington, four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Bearers were Leslie W. Bassett, Edward Bassett, William Ellsworth and
Daniel Broderick.
