Amos Earl Bassett Jr., 88, formerly of West Chester, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 26, 2010, at Garden Spot Village Retirement Community in New Holland.
He was the husband of Lois C. Heed Bassett. They married in June 1956 and celebrated 54 years of marriage.
Mr. Bassett was born in 1922 in West Palm Beach, Fla., and raised in Jupiter, Fla. He was the son of the late Amos E. Bassett Sr. and the late Mittie R. Biger Bassett.
Amos received his degree in accounting from the University of Florida in 1944 and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
In 1953, he came to the West Chester Borough School District and the West Chester Board as an accountant. He was then named secretary of the board in 1963. Mr. Bassett worked in the school district for 31 years.
Mr. Bassett served with the West Chester Community Center as treasurer in 1955.
In 1975, he was awarded the Citizen Award from the Chester County United Way and in 1980 he was honored with the Citizen Award through the Black Student Union at Henderson High School. He also served as president in 1991 for the West Chester Area Senior Center, where he received the first past president's award in 2002. In 1991, Amos received the Citizen of the Year award from the West Chester Chamber of Commerce and in 1992 he was awarded the Outstanding & Meritorious Service to Humanity from the West Chester Lodge #853 of the Grand Lodge, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks.
Amos also served as secretary to the West Chester Rotary Club from 1984-2003 and as the treasurer of the Chester County Chapter, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.
Amos served on the following committees: the Chester County Boy Scouts of America, Chester County Day-Chester County Hospital, Red Cross, Barclay Friends, Salvation Army, Christian C. Sanderson Museum, Chester County Historical Society, Fame Fire Company, Wilmington & Western Railroad and the Historic Red Clay Association.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Amy B. Jameson and her husband, Jeff. of Honey Brook; and granddaughter, Courtney Jameson; he is also survived by his brother, Richard Bassett of St. Augustine, Fla.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Amos's Life at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, at the West Chester United Methodist Church, 129 S. High St., West Chester.
Interment will be private.
