Roger G. Bass
Roger G. Bass Sr., 70, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.
He was born Nov. 17, 1941, in Brewton, Ala.
Roger moved from Milton, Fla., to Arcadia, Fla., where he resided from 1962 until 2010, when he moved to Punta Gorda. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Arcadia, and two of the Florida Bluegrass Associations. Roger was a carpenter and roofer by trade, and owned and operated B and S Roofing for over 25 years. He enjoyed square-dancing, playing guitar and singing country and bluegrass music, and was a member of several bands, including Tater Hill Band and Roger Bass and the Hillbillies.
Roger is survived by his wife, Manuela Moeller Bass of Punta Gorda; son, Roger 'Pete' (companion, Sharon Carson) Bass Jr. of Arcadia; daughter, Rhonda 'Rhonnie' (Homer 'Sparky') Murphy of Arcadia; stepdaughters, Katie (Larry) Taylor of Zolfo Springs, Fla., and Ramona (companion, Bobby Martin) Moeller of North Port, Fla., stepson, Eddie Bernard of Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Emily 'Penny' Wheeler of Greensboro, Fla., and Christine 'Cricket' (Bill) Warren of Canton, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his first two wives, Bettie Gomillion Bass and Odell Norton Bass; and his parents, William H. 'Bob' and Mary Irene Wyatt Bass.
A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home of Arcadia. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Arcadia. Burial will be in Milton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roger's name to Tidewell Hospice Inc., 917 N. Arcadia Ave., Arcadia, FL 34266. Online condolences can be made at www.pongerkaysgrady.com.

Roger Bass tribute concert to be held Saturday
The life of local bluegrass musician Roger Bass will be celebrated Saturday at the DeSoto County Fairgrounds with a concert.
Bass passed away Nov. 16, the day before his 71st birthday, of lung cancer.
Although, he was a roofer and carpenter by trade --he operated B&S Roofing for more than 25 years -- it was in music where he left his mark.
Bass was a bluegrass guitarist for several bands; among these were the Tater Hill Band and Roger Bass and the Hillbillies.
He was born in Brewton, Ala., on Nov. 17, 1941. His family then moved to Milton, Fla., and in 1962, Bass moved to Arcadia, where he resided for the next 38 years. In 2010, he moved to Punta Gorda.
According to Bluegrass Today, Bass was a fierce supporter and contributor to the Special Olympics for 18 years.
A two-time widower, Bass is survived by his wife, Manuela; son Pete, and daughter Rhonda, as well as three step-children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Bass was interred on Nov. 21 at Milton's Crain Cemetery.
'Manuela and Pete would like to thank everybody who helped with Roger and those who contributed to his well being. This is a difficult moment for all of us, but his life will be celebrated this weekend,' said family spokesperson Sharon Carson.
The tribute will feature several bands, including the Tater Hill Band and James King. Evan Carl will be the master of ceremonies.
The tribute starts at 10 a.m., and a donation of $15 -- to help pay the bands and venue -- is being asked at the door.
The DeSoto Fairgrounds are at 100 Heard Street, off U.S. Highway 17.
