Charles S. Bass
Bass, Charles S. 78, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, June 28, 2008. Instead of traditional funeral services, there will be a "Celebration of His Life" held in Dallas, TX on Monday, July 14. Charles was born June 15, 1930, in Albany, NY to John and Irene Bass. He graduated High School from Vincentian Institute and later attended Siena College. Even though Charles retired from the hotel and convention industry back in 1996, he couldn't stay away from his passion. He volunteered for Fun Central, a part of the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau, weekly up until his stroke one year ago. His hotel career began in Albany, NY in 1956 at the former De Witt Clinton Hotel in the sales and convention department. Over the years, he worked at the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls, NY, and the Roney Plaza Hotel on Miami Beach, FL. He later moved to Dallas, TX to work at the Cabana Hotel before moving back to Florida to be the Sales Manager at the Hollywood Beach Hotel in Hollywood, FL. In 1968, he went to work at the Hotel Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, FL. He started as the Director of Sales and eventually became the Executive VP. In 1978, he moved to Dallas, TX where he ran the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau for 9 years as the Senior VP. A few years after leaving the Bureau, he went on to be the Director of Sales/Marketing at The Village of Breckenridge Resort in Colorado for a few years before retiring and returning back to Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John. Survivors: daughter, Debra Martin and husband, Robert, of Cobleskill, NY; son, Stephen Bass and wife, Isabel, of Guilderland, NY; daughter, Stacie Bursese, of Homestead, FL; son, J. Kyle Bass and wife, Mary Kathryn, of Dallas, TX; daughter, Kacey Austin and husband, Kirk, of Burleson, TX; grandchildren, Michael, Courtney, and Shelby Martin of Cobleskill, NY, Tyler, Jonathan, and Gabrielle Bass of Guilderland, NY, Justine Harpster and husband Tom of Guilderland, NY, Stephanie Bursese of Jersey City, NJ, Sam and Ellie Bass of Dallas, TX, Karly and Keaton Austin of Burleson, TX; and one great-granddaughter, Schuyler Martin of Cobleskill, NY.
