William Harrison Bass
Dover - William Harrison Bass of Dover departed this life on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at home surrounded by family. He was 75.
He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on June 11, 1932, from the union of Percy Harrison Bass and Grace Steptoe-Bass. Mr. Bass remembered the fun times that he had with his friends and frolicking in the hills of the city. He accepted Christ and was baptized at Court Street Baptist Church when he was approximately 8 years of age. Mr. Bass joined and sang in the junior choir until he graduated with honors from Dunbar High School. While serving in the United States Air Force after high school, he met and was overwhelmed by the lovely Mildred Bernice Witherspoon, who became his wife in December 1958. This year they would have celebrated 49 years together. From this union they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Millicent and Rhonda. Mr. Bass retired from the Air Force in 1970, graduated from Delaware State (College) University in 1974 with a Bachelor and Master of Science in Psychology and later earned a Master's in Counseling. He worked with various community agencies and served on several boards. Mr. Bass felt that his election to the Capital School Board and his volunteer work with the Center for Community Justice were the most rewarding. Those that knew William knew that "Bass" enjoyed the finer things in life. He was an avid reader, music collector and singer, card player and carpenter. After his wife and family, he was extremely passionate about music and golf. If the weather was good, Bass was on a golf course. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by two dear friends, Robert Barnett and John Quarles. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Mildred Bass of Dover; two daughters, Millicent Seth of Bear and Rhonda Schone of New Castle; one sister, Hazel Berry; a niece, Cynthia Berry; two sons-in law, Pastor Stanley E. Seth and Ed Schone; six grandchildren, Ashley N. Seth, Harrison R. Schone, Nathanael W. Seth, Michael A. Seth, Thelonious R. Schone and Alaric R. Schone; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mt. Zion AME Church in Dover, where friends may view two hours prior. An Omega ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Full military honors will follow immediately after the service. Burial will be private. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
