James Bassett (1929 ? 2017) (Picture included)
James Basset passed away peacefully on Nov. 29, 2017 at Hospice House in Venice, Florida after battling dementia for the past several years. During his final days Jim was surrounded by family and dear friends.
Born in Detroit Michigan on Nov. 8, 1929. Despite his illness Jim never lost his sense of dignity, self-respect, sense of humor or his joy for life. Jim was a graduate of Madonna University and Macomb County Community College in Michigan. He was a firefighter with the Detroit Fire Department and later became Fire Chief in the city of Woodhaven, Michigan.
Jim proudly served his country in the Marine Corps from 1948-1952. He was part of a Marine Detachment on board the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea. He and his fellow Marine and Navy comrades formed a lasting bond - some of the happiest memories have been those spent at the ship's reunions of the USS Philippine Sea and Seagoing Marines.
Retiring in Florida brought him much joy. He was a member of the Epiphany Cathedral while in Venice. He loved his family, friends, traveling to different parts of the world, playing golf with his friends in Venice, his cottage in Standish, Michigan, and sailing his sailboat "Yellow Bird" on Saginaw Bay. He loved art, music, playing the violin, theater and especially ballroom dancing.
For the past three years, Jiim was a resident at A Banyan Residence Assisted Living Facility in Venice. There he was treated with respect and affection by staff and caregivers. He was very content there. His friend and roommate, Robert Watterworth, was a great source of comfort.
A few days before Jim passed away there was a beautiful moving musical tribute to him, as violinist Keven Aland played the violin by Jim's hospital bed.
He is survived by his loving wife of twenty years, Marisa; six children by his first wife Dorothy: David, Michele, Thomas, Philip, Ellen, Maureen; his two step-sons Craig and Mark and their families; his loyal friend and loving sister, Barbara; his brother-in-law Regis who was a steadfast comfort and always present during the difficult times; seven grandchildren Marie, Julie, Ben, Shane, Jacob, Kate, Shelby; five step-grandchildren: George, David, Michael, Alex, and Victoria; and three great-grandchildren: Ariana, Aaliyah and Amiah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marcella Bassett; and four brothers: Robert, Richard, Jack and Bill.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, where Jim's remains will be placed. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd. Sarasota, Florida 34238, the Alzheimer?s Association, or a charity of your choice.
