      W.C. Bassette, 81, Road Official, Dies

      William C. Bassette, 81, of 272 Thompson Blvd., retired superintendent of maintenance and operation of the State Department of Public Works, died at 8:10 this morning in the House of the Good Samaritan following a short illness.
      The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Cleveland Spink Funeral Home, Inc., Reverend Weston A. Stevens, pastor of All Souls Universalist Unitarian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
      Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be contributed to Clarkson college.
      Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Priscilla Lee Bassette; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph S. (Blanche) Lee Pierce, Elmira; Mrs. David S. (Janet) Craig Summerville, 327 Ten Eyck St.; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Deachman, Grafton, New Hampshire; and Mrs. Robert W. (Mary) Mannigan, Harrisville.
      Mr. Bassette was born in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada, September 19, 1892, son of John and Jeanne Craig Bassette. He attended schools in Harrisville, having moved there with his parents at the age of six. He was graduated from Clarkson College of Technology in 1916 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.
      A registered professional engineer, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in civil engineering by Clarkson June 5, 1960.
      During his summers at Clarkson, Mr. Bassette worked for the State Department of Transportation and became a full-time employe after graduation. He was an Army captain and battalion commander at Camp Jackson, South Carolina, during World War I. At the end of the war, he resumed his state employment. He married Priscilla M. Lee, then of 211 S. Pleasant St., December 20, 1920, at Emmanuel Congregational Church, Reverend Hezekiah Pyle, pastor, officiating.
      From 1931 to 1937, he was resident engineer with the State Department of Public Works in Jefferson County and from 1937 to 1958, was superintendent of maintenance for the five-county District 7, which comprised about 18 per cent of the state's land area. In 1958, he was named superintendent of operation and maintenance for the State Department of Transportation, in charge of highways, bridges and waterways. He retired September 19, 1963 at the age of 71.
      Mr. Bassette was a member of All Souls Universalist-Unitarian Church; Diana Lodge 928, F&AM, Harrisville; Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Buffalo in Buffalo; Media Temple, Watertown; past commandery and life member, Watertown American Legion Post 61; member, Palmer Creek Club, and a past president of the Watertown Golf Club.

      Annual Bassette Reunion Held
      Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mannigan, Mr. and Mrs. Varick Sanford, of Potsdam, and Ross Bassette, were host and hostesses at the annual Bassett reunion held at the Lar Parr camp at Lake Bonaparte on Sunday. A picnic dinner was served at 2 p.m. followed by a short business meeting.
      The officers elected to succeed John Bassette, president; and Mrs. William Mannigan, secretary and treasurer; were: Mr. Ross Bassette and Mrs. Harold Bassette, respectively. Games. swimming and boating were enjoyed.

      Prominent Harrisville Man Dies After Extended Illness
      Harrisville, January 21 - George Craig Bassette, 56, former Northern New York lumberman and for the past ten years proprietor of a service station at Harrisville, died at 5 p.m. Friday at his home. Death followed an extended illness. He had been in poor health since he underwent an operation in April.
      Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Mervil George Bassette, of Adams Center and Harold Edwin Bassette, who was engaged with him in the operation of the service station at Harrisville; three brothers, John and Ross Bassette, of Harrisville and WIlliam C. Bassette, 1001 Myrtle ave., Watertown; three sisters, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Deachman, of North Woodstock, New Hampshire; Mrs. Robert (Mary) Mannigan, of Harrisville and Mrs. Varick (Christina) Stanford, of Potsdam. A daughter, Evelyn Mable, died in 1927.
