Meridee Lou “Dee” Bassett (Nelson)
BASSETT MERIDEE LOU "DEE" NELSON passed away on June 16, 2013, at the age of 84, of natural causes in Bradenton, Florida. Meridee was born in Harlan, Iowa, on March 30, 1929, to Russell F. and Vera Nelson. She grew up in Harlan and Madrid, Iowa, and met her husband, Carroll Ralph ("Ralph") Bassett, in Des Moines, Iowa. They were married on January 29, 1954, and relocated to Detroit, Michigan, in late 1956. Dee and Ralph spend their adult years in the Detroit area raising three sons, Scott, Brent, and Kent. Dee furthered her education at Madonna University in Livonia and worked as a teaching assistant with developmentally disabled students at Stark Center in Livonia for several years. Dee and Ralph moved to Bradenton, Florida, in 1997, where they enjoyed an active retirement with friends and family. Ralph passed away on October 28, 2011. Dee developed dementia and moved to assisted living, receiving regular visits from family and friends. Dee is survived by her three sons, Scott (Debbie), Brent (Lisa), and Kent (Jennifer). She is also survived by grandchildren Vicki (Tim), Amanda, Laine, Rachel, Steven, Joel, Jarred, and Molly, and great grandson Andrew. Dee's ashes will be buried alongside Ralph's at the Sarasota (Florida) National Memorial Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Michigan later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dee may be made to the Alpha-1 Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Avenue, Suite 302, Miami, Florida 33133, or online at alpha-1foundation.org. Alpha-1 is a rare genetic disorder of which both Dee and Ralph were carriers. It causes lung and liver disease.
