Bassett Prisoner Of Huns
War Department Acknowledges Error in Reporting Forestport
Soldier Killed in Battle
Foresetport, November 15 - Word has been received in this village that Elmer Bassett, son of Frank Bassett, proprietor of the Albert Hotel in this village, is alive and well in France. Last July the parents of the young man received word that he had been killed in battle. Since that time they had received a letter from him, and they telegraphed to Washington to find out whether their son was alive or dead. Last night a message came from the War Department saying that an investigation had been made in France and that Private Bassett had been captured by the Germans and held a prisoner. The report that he had been killed in battle was erroneous.
