  Notes	Whitesville News, Thursday, March 11, 1897 Obituary The deceased, Frank Merton Bassett, was born in the town of Independence, on the 11th day of January, 1853. He received his early education at Alfred and Woodhull academy, remaining about a year at each place. With such preparation and qualification for the duties of public life, on the 1st of March 1876 he was united in marriage with Miss Hortense Manning, with whom he has lived happily till death did them part. His first business venture was at Greenwood, where he remained eight years and then removed to Whitesville, where he had prosecuted business continuously and successfully for thirteen years, until death released him on the morning of March 4th, 1897, in his 44th year. Mr. Bassett has not only established a good business reputation during all these years, but has also endeared himself to this community by his genial spirit and manly virtues. He made profession of religion at Greenwood during the pastorate of Rev. C.R. Buck, but did not connect himself with any church, but during his residence here, he has not only contributed freely but liberally for church and benevolent purposes and during my pastorate, has at least once every Sabbath, been an observant and interested attendant at the public worship of God. Mr. Bassett was a good citizen, public spirited and patriotic and an intelligent and deeply interested observer of the tendency of public events that would naturally make or mar the tranquility and prosperity of the nation. He invariably supported all measures calculated to promote the common good of the community, such as schools, churches, temperance, peace and order. He was a good and kind neighbor, a firm friend, a devoted husband, and indulgent parent, a genial companion and at all times just, liberal and kind. At his funeral the representatives of varied benevolent orders of which he was a member, by their presence and emblems of sorrow gave significant expression to the fact that he was a brother beloved and the unusual attendance of the first citizens at his last obsequies clearly indicated the estimation in which he was held by the community.
