He died 4 Jun 1895 in Thornapple, Barry County, Michigan. He married Sophia P. McIntyre, daughter of Leonard and Olive McIntyre, on 16 Apr 1857 in Elton, Cattaraugus County, New York. She was born 19 Jul 1839 in New York. She died 8 Jun 1917 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. They are both buried in Middleville, Barry County, Michigan. George served in Company D, 154th Regiment of New York Volunteers, enlisted on 5 Aug 1862 in Yorkshire, New York. He was captured at Gettysburg and was paroled at Savannah, Georgia on 20 Nov 1864. From the Middleville Sun, Thursday June 13, 1895: George Bassett died at his home northeast of Middleville on June 4th. The deceased was born in the State of New York September 19, 1936 and had been a resident of Michigan for 26 years. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army and served until the end of the war. While in the Army he was a prisoner, being confined in prison 17 months in all. He was buried from the M.E. Church on Thursday June 6th. In the 1850 census the Richard Bassett family was living at Chicktawaga, Erie, NY - p. 255 (BYU film #17075). In this census George was age 14. The place of birth was left blank. In the 1855 state census the Richard Bassett family was living at Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, NY - p. 285 (BYU film #583832). MILITARY SERVICE: George Bassett served in the Civil War. He was 41 years old and of Leighton, Allegan, Michigan when he entered the service on 5 Aug 1862 in Company D of the 154th Regiment of New York Infantry. Prisoner of War Records show him captured at Gettysburg 1 July 1863; paroled at Savannah, GA 20 Nov 1864; reported at Camp Parole, MD 28 Nov 1864; and sent to Camp Distribution, VA 9 Feb 1865. He was discharged 11 June 1865. He was 5' 8" tall with dark hair.
