Came To Colorado As Baby in 1864
Mrs. Clara A. Berner, 79, one of the little band of hardy pioneers who first settled the Colorado territory more than three quarters of a century ago, died in her sleep last night at her home at 624 West Fifth street. Her husband, William F. Berner, himself a pioneer of Colorado, discovered her death when he went to her room this morning to call her. Beside the bed were her book and glasses lying where she had left them last night after reading.
Born Clara Adeline Bassett at old Fort Monroe, Virginia on March 2, 1861, she came with her parents three yeras later across the country in a wagon train to the plains of Colorado. Her family settled in 1864 at Burlington, 13 years before Colorado territory became a state. Burlington later became Longmont.
In December 1882 she came to the Little Thompson valley southwest of the new settlement called Loveland that was then being built beside the new Colorado Central railroad. On December 20, 1882 she was married to William F. Berner and they settled on a homestead near Lone Tree Lake. Three sons, Ernest, Bert and George and two daughters, Ola and Mrs. T.G. Foster, were born to the pioneer couple.
A few years ago they moved into Loveland to make their home on West Fifth street. They observed their golden wedding with a family reunion on December 20, 1932.
True to the pioneer tradition Mrs. Berner worked side-by-side with her husband through the years overcoming the hardships of the western frontier which she lived to see developed into a modern farm community peopled by thousands of families. She was an active member of the Baptist church, the Order of Eastern Star and the Little Thompson Pioneer Society.
Surviving are her hausband, William; three children, Ernest of Long Beach, Cal., George of Denver, and Mrs. T.G. Foster of Windsor, two brothers, Ed of Loveland and Kenneth of Fort Collins, and three sisters, Mrs. Stella Kelim, Loveland, Mrs. Ella Sankey, Fort Collins, and Mrs. Hattie Ellis, Twin Falls, Idaho. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. They are in charge of the Kibby Funeral home.
