Harry T. Robbins - Farmer in several districts of the State successively
Harry T. Robbins follows in ancestral occupation, for both his parents and his grandparents in the male line were farmers. At his establishment near Woodstown, he raises a varied crop under intensive farming, and finds time from his agricultural duties to have a word in most public affairs.
Mr. Robbins was born at Commissioners Pike, Pilesgrove Township, Salem County, on October 16, 1877, son of William and Mary F. (Tolman) Robbins. His paternal grandparents, Van Room and Margaretta (Blackwell) Robbins, natives of Monmouth County, engaged in farming at Swedesboro for many years, the grandfather living there until his death in 1887 in his eighty-fifth year. The next in line, William, moved to Salem County to establish a farm, buying the Charles Clark estate, and developing the property to a high degree of production. His place was especially famous for the fine horses which were raised there, including Goldsmith Volunteer, Yorktown Belle, and Young Volunteer.
William and Mary Robbins were the parents of six children: Van Room, William, Alberta, Blanche, Harry T., and Leon. Harry T. Robbins attended the public schools in Salem County, and remained until his twenty-third year upon the family farm at Commissioners Pike. He then farmed on shares for one year, and at the termination of this arrangement, bought the Thomas R. Cole Farm, adjoining the one upon which he had been born and brought up. This farm he has owned and operated successfully ever since. He has one hundred and sixty-five acres, upon which he raises the roughage for his herd of thirty-five graded Holsteins in addition to extensive acreage in tomatoes, white potatoes, corn, and other crops.
This farm which he now directs is a worthy successor of those previously held by members of the Robbins family. His work upon it, and his willingness to assume public duties, have made him a prominent member of this community. A Democrat in politics, Mr. Robbins has been a member of the board of education for twenty-three years, and of the election board for only three years less. His opinion is often sought in local affairs, and his support for any program directed to the public welfare is a foregone conclusion.
On April 12, 1900, Harry T. Robbins married Jennie R. Bassett of Upper Pittsgrove Township, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Louis Bassett. They are members of the Daretown Baptist Church, and are the parents of nine children: 1. Mable, a graduate of the New Jersey State Normal School; 2. B. Bassett, a farmer; 3. Agnes L., a graduate of Miss Ilman's School; 4. Alice, also a graduate of girls' school; 5. Mary; 6. Dorothy; 7. William; 8. Helen; 9. Edward. All of the children graduated from the local high school.
